All-in-one 24-g049c
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Can I replace the current hard drive in my 24-g049c all-in-one computer with an SSD to improve p[erforrmance?  How should I spec the SSD (i.e. thickness, width etc.)?  Is it worth it?  Any other considerations?  Brand of SSD?

Here is a Manual showing how to do the replacement:

Yes an SSD in place of the hard drive is the best single upgrade you can do. Well worth it and your computer is new enough to profit from the upgrade. Your hard drive is a 3.5 inch desktop drive and all SSDs on the market now are 2.5 inch wide and 7 mm thick. In order to install the SSD where the hard drive is now you need a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch adapter.

I like the Samsung 850 Evo SSD it's the best consumer grade SSD on the market but does tend to be priced to reflect that. You can buy on price. Western Digital makes good ones, Kingston, Adata.

Post back with any other questions. Happy to kick around software transfer/reinstallation.

Thanks for your reply Huffer.  That is exactly the info I wanted.  I would also like your thoughts on transfer of the OS and data to the new SSD.  I already have the Fall edition of Creator's Win 10 and would lke to keep it and my other programs and data without reloading.  I think there are programs out there that do that.  I have an external HDD that I can use for imaging.

The easiest way to do it without buying anything is to use the Windows backup app and make a system image. This was introduced with Windows 7 but still works on Windows 10. Just open settings, update and security, backup, more options, advanced settings, system image backup. Set the backup to include a system image and all your files and store the resulting backup file on that external hard drive. Note the size of the backup because you should get an SSD at least twice that big. Now get the Windows 10 install disk (usb thumb drive or DVD) from the Microsoft Media Creation tool site and start the installer when you have the new blank SSD in the machine. Install onto the SSD using the system image backup you made from the original hard drive:

It will restore the PC to the same state; apps, files, desktop background, etc.
