Yes, you can replace ODD (CD/DVD drive) with HDD/SSD using a caddy/adapter BUT please note, you won't be able to boot from there.
My suggestion (for a quick and easy way)
(a) Clone existing HDD to SSD,
(b) Swap HDD/SSD and keep old HDD OUTSIDE machine for few days,
(c) Whan totally happy with the outcome, format old HDD and put it to the ODD bay for storage.
Note: The thickness of the ODD on your machine is 9.0mm therefore you need a caddy with 9.0mm otherwise it won't fit. There are few of them on the following link
