Hi,

Yes, you can replace the 2.5" hard drive with larger capacity drive and you can choose your prefered brand such as Seagate, WD... which you can easily find online. You could also opt for a hybrid drive or an SSD which would increase everyday performance of the PC.

On page 48 of service manual you can see the steps to replace the drive.

You will need to reinstall the OS either by migrating an image, using HP recovery disks or by downloading the media creation tool from Microsoft, running and creating a bootable pendrive with the OS on it and then use this drive to perform clean install. Windows 10 will automatically activate once installed and connected to internet.

Hope it helps,

David

First off thank you for your answer.

So here is part B: I have been comparing drives and see that all the ones offerred are SATA 3, I understand SATA 1, 2 and 3 are backwards compatible but will only preform at the speed limited by the MOBO. I have read now that the cables really all work the same as far as speed as well.

So here is the question: Has anyone had problems using a 7200 RPM drive in a laptop? I have read comments about more noise and more heat.

I do not need extreme speed, I do want more storage (photos and art pictures.

I am now thinking about the Hitachi HGST Travelstar 7K1000 2.5-Inch available in 5400RPM or 7200 RPM. They have a 3 year warranty. Oddly the 720 is less expensive than the 5400.

A follow up. I replaced the original drive with a hitachi travelstar 4K 32 Mb cache 1.5 Tb drive. I plugged in the install Windows 10 flash drive made with the Windows media correction tool and Windows started loading imediately. Kind of amusing how cortana talks you through the last part.

I can create a new post but will ask right here first:

This DV7 6143cl came with two hard drives, the second  belive was Windows 7 recovery. I used to see the HP Tools on a partition of drive C and the second drive listed seperatly. I am not seeing the second drive at all now.

What are possible reasons?  I read something about not mixing 512e drived and 4k drives?

Second follow up: there is no second hard drive just an empty bay. Defective memory on my part.
