Hi Paul.
Thanks for responding, yet again! 🙄You must be fed up by now so I'll let you be for a day or two, (Lonely old man alert!) 😂 My next problem won't be installing it and getting it to work. It will be getting my stuff backed up and then installed on the new drive. My history with back ups is terrible and getting it to re-install my programmes and saved files. I don't think I've ever had one work straight off, ever. Then there's getting back to the current Win 11 Pro. I've done two upgrades I think it is to get to this. I'll have to install the original Win o/s and then each upgrade and update. Unless there's an easier way to do it. I'll have a chat to Microsoft. They're usually really helpful, I know because I've done this lots over the years and hate it. So, I'll leave you be for now, have a good weekend and as always, thank you for your help and advice. Best wishes, Dave.

You're very welcome, Dave.
There is a relatively easy way to transfer your existing drive's configuration to the new one.
I believe Crucial provides access to free cloning software so you can do that in just a few minutes.
Acronis True Image for Crucial
There is a user guide for how to clone the disk.
You will need to put the new 2 TB drive in the enclosure in order to do this because your notebook only has one NVMe slot.
You have a great weekend too!
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul. This doesn't need a response, so I haven't quite broken my word of not pestering you for a while 😁I took the jump and ordered the Gen5 P510. EVery which way I looked at it, I felt it was the right decision to make. Sure, I paid an extra £43'ish and it's on Pre-order, so I don't have one yet and I paid extra for something I won't benefit from yet, but....... I'll let you know when I get it and fit it. Thanks again and have a good weekend.
Dave

I didn't think cloning was an option. My HDD has been reporting imminent failure on and of for a few years now. At first, it seemed to be the odd Win update that triggered it because it went away for a while and then would return after another update. It was aknowledged an issue at one point by Microsoft, I believe. However, there is probably more than a few bad sectors in my OS now and cloning would carry them over onto the new drive. That was why I was looking at a clean install. I was also thinking of doing an extra partition on the new disc and keeping an optical image of my OS and software for future use if needed. I have EaseUS Todo Backup but knowing my luck, it'll go **bleep** up. You really cannot imagine the problems I have with back up software. 😭

Yes, I forgot about that part...carrying over bad sectors.
I don't have a lot of programs and file on my PC's so I always clean install Windows when the need arises and then just copy my files to the drive and reinstall my programs.
I found the easiest way for me to transfer my files into the new Windows installation is to copy the file folders in my user profile to a portable hard drive and then let them overwrite the empty folders in my user profile in the new Windows installation.

You're a saint! You never gave in to the, 'Memory is getting bigger so I can save everything in case I need it 20 years later' syndrome! I wish 'were I that man'! Lol! best thing is, I never have needed it that far down the line but I still do it 🤯 OMG! I'm a techno hoarder! If that wasn't a thing then, it is now! 😁Yes folks, you read it here first, "Techno Hoarder". Deckhanddave is credited with being the person whom not only coined the phrase but was the first ever diagnosed with it! WooHoo, ain't I the lucky one! I really am dreading the re-installation of it all. I'll probably just shove it all on a hard drive and save it in case I ever need some of it again.
Totally off topic now, an idea popped into my head whilst searching the SSD's. I noticed a tab on Ebuyers for refurbished items and took a look. I was surprised to see some pretty decent laptops for sale at low'ish prices. I was thinking, when I next look into a change of laptop, I might consider such a purchase and then do an upgrade like I'm doing now. I think it could be a very good option for a general highish spec at lower prices. Is that something you would find interesting? It probably wouldn't be a HP but the experience of doing it and the end result and costing would be similar no matter who the manufacturer. If it is something you would be interested to observe, I'll make sure I contact you so that you can. I just kind of got an itch to see what could be done and got with ot too uch financial outlay and whether it would be much cheaper than buying totally brand new. It'll be a while before I do, unless I get a couple of minutes where I get bored and decide to take on project number 5,989,000. all of which are ongoing.
Hope you're having a good weekend and I'll be back in touch when I get the new SSD.
Cheers
Dave

Hi, Dave:
I'm not much into the latest and greatest.
I only use my PCs for e-mails, surfing the web and watching you-tube videos.
The last PC I bought new was in 2011--an HP 8200 Elite CMT and it still works great.
I have is as a backup if I need it.
I buy off lease Dell and HP business class desktop PC's and the only upgrades I did to those was to add some low power graphics cards and more memory.
My newest PC has an Intel 7th gen core processor and I did install a Crucial P5 (old Gen 3 model), and that is my go to PC.
So, yes if you can find a good bargain on the gently used PC market, go for it!
I have some old files I keep too but they are on a portable hard drive in case I ever need them.
My PC's don't have more than 50 GB of files on them--mostly pictures.
I have no problem with having a 250 GB SSD in my PC's although one has a 500 GB drive and the other a 1 TB drive.
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul
I thought I'd just reach out and let you know I haven't forgotten our correspondence. I'm still waitng for the delivery of my Gen 5 so haven't managed to do the upgrade yet. I bought it from Ebuyer whom I believe to be a reputable company but I am getting a bit peed off with them. When I ordered it showed estimate delivery 24 June. I checked in with them and just got the "It's a pre-order and estimates are just that estimates"! Whilst technically true, it isn't a very good attitude to show a customer. I'm gogin to check with Crucial and see if there are supply issues with it and then go back to Ebuyer. I'm starting to wonder if I did the right thing now🙄 Catch ya later, Dave
