Recently, I purchased an HP Envy x360 laptop for educational purposes. Previously, I had been using my HP 340S G7 for about three years. Unfortunately, my previous laptop didn't meet the requirements to upgrade to Windows 11. This didn't disappoint me since I was quite comfortable with Windows 10.

The new laptop has Windows 11 pre-installed. One thing I've noticed is that, on my previous laptop, I could navigate back through folders in File Explorer or go back to websites in Chrome using the combination of the right Alt button and the left/right arrow keys. This was convenient for me as a right-handed person. However, on my new laptop, this key combination doesn't work, and I am forced to use the left Alt key with the left/right arrow keys for the same purpose.

I don't want to use the left Alt button. Instead, I want to use the right Alt button with the left/right arrow keys on my new laptop. I am looking for suggestions from this subreddit community on how to achieve this. Thanks!

Hi @k1olly,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the issue you're experiencing with the right Alt key not functioning as expected in combination with the arrow keys on your HP Envy x360 running Windows 11 could be due to several reasons. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Check Keyboard Layout and Language Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
  • Ensure that the keyboard layout is set to your preferred language (e.g., US English).
  • Click on your language and then go to Options to verify that the correct keyboard layout is installed.

Keyboard Shortcuts Settings:

  • Windows 11 may have different default shortcuts or might have reset some shortcuts during an update.
  • Check if any applications or the operating system itself has overridden the right Alt + arrow key combination.

Keyboard Driver Update:

  • Sometimes, the keyboard driver might need an update or a reinstall.
  • Go to Device Manager > Keyboards.
  • Right-click on your keyboard device and select Update driver.
  • Alternatively, you can uninstall the driver and restart your laptop to let Windows reinstall it automatically.

HP Support Assistance:

  • If the issue persists, it might be specific to the HP Envy x360's hardware or firmware. updates that might resolve the problem.

Windows Update:

  • Ensure your Windows 11 is up to date, as Microsoft frequently releases updates that might fix such issues.
  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
