OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck2000 (70W99AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Good morning everyone,

I'm writing to bring up an issue and to understand whether I should do something about it or not.

I recently purchased a 17" Omen gaming laptop with an RTX 4080, 32 GB of RAM, and a 13th gen i7. It arrived a few days ago, and I've noticed that every time I open or move it, I hear a creaking sound coming from the right side of the keyboard.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is it a manufacturing defect or just the normal build of the laptop?

Hi @FabioTur-dev,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A creaking noise from your laptop, especially a high-end model like the HP Omen 17 with an RTX 4080 and a 13th Gen i7, can be concerning. Here’s a detailed approach to determine whether it's a manufacturing defect or a normal characteristic of the laptop:

**1. Assess the Noise

  1. Determine the Source:
    • Identify the Location: Try to pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from. If it’s specifically from the right side of the keyboard, it could be related to the hinge or internal components.
  2. Test Different Conditions:
    • Open and Close Gently: Open and close the laptop gently to see if the noise persists. Pay attention to whether it occurs during specific actions like movement or when pressing certain keys.

**2. Check for Common Issues

Hinge and Build:

  • Inspect the Hinge: Sometimes, creaking noises can come from the hinge mechanism. Check if the hinge feels loose or if there's any visible gap.

Keyboard and Build Quality:

  • Check Keyboard: Press gently around the right side of the keyboard to see if the noise changes. It might be a keyboard mounting issue.

**3. Consider Normal HP Characteristics

Laptop Build:

  • Material Expansion: Some laptops use materials that can expand or contract with temperature changes, leading to minor noises. This might be normal, especially in high-performance laptops with high-powered components.

Design Tolerance:

  • Design Tolerance: Some level of noise might be considered normal depending on the design and materials used. However, it should not be excessively loud or disruptive.

**4. Perform Basic Troubleshooting

Update BIOS and Drivers:

  • Check for Updates: Ensure that your BIOS and drivers are up to date. Sometimes, software updates can fix issues related to hardware performance.

Run Diagnostics:

  • HP Hardware Diagnostics: Use HP’s built-in diagnostic tools to check if there are any hardware issues. You can access this by pressing Esc or F2 during startup to run the diagnostics.

**5. Document the Issue

Record the Noise:

  • Audio Recording: Record the noise using a smartphone or another device. This can help HP Support diagnose the issue more accurately.

Provide Details:

  • Describe the Issue: When contacting support, provide detailed information about when the noise occurs, how loud it is, and any other relevant observations.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
