I’m trying to install a new SSD in my laptop. I cracked it open and only found an empty space where I guess it should go. I don’t see the existing drive. I guess I could install my new one but I need a SATA Drive? and I don’t know how it would connect. And do I need to remove the existing drive?

Download the maintenance and service guide here https://support.hp.com/ca-en/product/hp-14-df0000-laptop-pc/23201152/model/24462211/manuals
If you require any special cabling it will list the HP part numbers which you can buy from parts.hp.com or check Ebay.
It looks like the unit comes standard with a PCIe NVram drive and you can install a standard SATA style drive but you will need a bracket and cable. Manual also references an adapter to add a second NVram drive
