I have HP Laptop and the SD Card Reader has stopped showing photos.
I put card in and when I view what is on it in explorer it shows thumbnails but not of the individual photos, just a standard icon, when I click to open any photo they won't open.
It does this with every SD card but if I put SD card into a USB adapter the photos show, so it appears to be issue with card reader.
Any suggestions as to what to do to solve it?

Meanwhile,
here's a list of articles you can use to resolve issues with the media card reader:
- Go into device manager and uninstall the card reader, it should be listed as IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the card reader. - check if the problem is caused due to card issue. If the SD card is broken, it won’t be recognized by PC. You can plug the card into another PC to see if it works. If it doesn’t work either, you can try cleaning the card. After cleaning the card, if it still doesn’t work, the card is probably broken, you may need to have your card replaced.
- check if the card reader works. If the card reader is stuck with dust, it will lead bad contact between the card and the card reader. Try cleaning the card reader slot and see if this solves the problem.
- check if the card reader is disabled in BIOS settings. At the first screen after a restart, look for a key to press for “BIOS” or “Settings”. Verify that the card reader has not been disabled in the BIOS settings.

Just checked BIOS and cannot see card reader there
So infuriating that card reader has a fault, it has not that long been back to HP for an issue with Bluetooth, Card Reader and USB.
If laptop has to go back for repair that will be third time in 11 months. 😞

@smc381 You would get a 90 repair warranty as well, if something does go bad within those 90 days after the 3rd repair, we may be able to help you replace the device (Although, this depends on the agent/supervisor you speak to during the repair, besides, 3rd time is a charm, it should resolve the issue once and for all.
Keep us posted,
And Good luck.

Thank you!
I called today and after a few things they agreed the card reader is faulty and it would need to be taken in for repair. I explained this would be third time in 11 months and second time card reader has failed, it did so in September so am not happy given only a month left on warranty and I do not have confidence that laptop will be ok, fear I will be having to pay for repairs.
They have escalated the case and Customer Service are to call me within a couple of days.
