HP Stream - 14-ax010wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I can not get any SD card to work on my HP Stream 14 ax010wm. I checked DEVICE MANAGER to see if a SD DRIVER is listed. None is.

I have WINDOWS 10 21H2 19044.1288 - 64 BIT version installed on 32 eMMc chip. I do not know what to do.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Duane

Hi @duanecalvillo

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I checked the details and I see that your system has an SD card reader. Here is a link from where you can check: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05243206

May I know if you have checked the plugged-in SD card on another system?

From when are you facing this issue?

I would suggest here is to update the Bios on the computer, using this link.

As the drive normally shows up only when the card is inserted into the slot,

here's a list of articles you can use to resolve issues with the media card reader:

  • Go into device manager and uninstall the card reader, it should be listed as IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the card reader.
Here is a link to device manager.
  • check if the problem is caused due to card issue. If the SD card is broken, it won’t be recognized by PC. You can plug the card into another PC to see if it works. If it doesn’t work either, you can try cleaning the card. After cleaning the card, if it still doesn’t work, the card is probably broken, you may need to have your card replaced.
  • check if the card reader works. If the card reader is stuck with dust, it will lead bad contact between the card and the card reader. Try cleaning the card reader slot and see if this solves the problem.
  • check if the card reader is disabled in BIOS settings. At the first screen after a restart, look for a key to press for “BIOS” or “Settings”.  Verify that the card reader has not been disabled in the BIOS settings.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I updated the BIOS as you stated. That just made my HP Stream 14-ax010wm run slower and just froze. I had to re-install WNDOWS 10 - 64 BIT ( 21H2 19044.1288 ). In doing this it created many problems for my HP Stream 14.

It would not recognize any SD card inserted into the built in SD card reader. This SD card has been FORMATTED and it works perfectly on my other WINDOWS 10 laptop. I could not find IDE ATA / ATAPI controllers anywhere in Device Manager.

I checked Disk drives, Other devices, SD card Adapters, Storage controllers and System devices. Maybe I am looking in the wrong areas. I do not know. Why not just install the CORRECT SD card driver for this version of WINDOWS 10 ?

When I select F10 when I power on the HP STREAM 14-axa010wm. I have no option to turn on SD Card. That does not exist any where in this HP Stream 14 BIOS menu options. Do you have or own a HP Stream 14-axa010 netbook. If not, everything you are telling me is NOT WORKING.

I just wish HP SUPPORT would have the RECOVERY software to download and install onto a USB flash drive. Instead of just telling people like myself to use Recovery Media Software to download the new version of WINDOWS 10 that does not work properly on these HP Stream 14 that only have eMMC chip storage only. No build in SSD or HARD drive what so ever.

Thank You for your time.

Duane

Nirvana_95,

I did what you posted. Read the below replies.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I checked the details and I see that your system has an SD card reader. Here is a link from where you can check: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05243206

I download the RealTek reader driver and installed it. SD card slot is not reading any SD card that I have.

May I know if you have checked the plugged-in SD card on another system?

From when are you facing this issue?

My SD card works just fine. I re-formatted and it works just fine on my other Windows netbook that I have with a build in SD card reader.

I would suggest here is to update the Bios on the computer, using this link.

I downloaded the BIOS upgrade .exe file and installed. The HP Stream 14 did a RESTART to do the update. But SD card reader is still not working.

As the drive normally shows up only when the card is inserted into the slot,

here's a list of articles you can use to resolve issues with the media card reader:

When I plug a USB adapter that can plug in a sd card. The SD card can be seen and read. But only using an USB adapter only. Internal SD card reader slot will not read any SD card. No matter what I do. No SD card reader drivers show in Device Manager.

  • Go into device manager and uninstall the card reader, it should be listed as IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the card reader.
  •
  • IDE ATA / ATAPI controllers is showing any where in Device Manager. I checked disk drives, Other devices, SD host adapters, Storage controllers and System devices. I do not know what other locations to check.
  • I turn ON the HP Stream 14 and hold down the F10 button. BIOS menu came up. But I do not see any option to ENABLE or DISABLE card reader in BIOS.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I did run MediaCreationTool21H2 and re-installed Windows 10 - 64 bit and did a complete new re-install of Windows 10. Still the build in SD card reader will not read any SD cards what so ever. USB adapter works ok with a SD card. But I would like the internal SD card reader to work. I do not know what else to do.

I wish I can download the original RECOVERY SOFTWARE that was installed on the HP Stream 14 from 2017. Maybe the HP Stream had Windows 10s or Windows 8.1. I do not know. All I know is that Windows 10 ( 21H2 19044.1288 ) - 64 BIT is not letting any SD card to be READ inside the built in sd card reader. I do not know why ?

Thank You for you suggestions and for your help. It is much appreciated. I wish HP SUPPORT had a download link for RESTORE software to be installed onto an USB flash drive to do a full restore to FACTORY condition when netbook was sold back in 2017 and 2018.
