Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case relating to SD Card reader is does not work. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
As the drive normally shows up only when the card is inserted into the slot,
here's a list of articles you can use to resolve issues with the media card reader:
-
Go into device manager and uninstall the card reader, it should be listed as IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the card reader.
-
check if the problem is caused due to card issue. If the SD card is broken, it won’t be recognized by PC. You can plug the card into another PC to see if it works. If it doesn’t work either, you can try cleaning the card. After cleaning the card, if it still doesn’t work, the card is probably broken, you may need to have your card replaced.
-
check if the card reader works. If the card reader is stuck with dust, it will lead bad contact between the card and the card reader. Try cleaning the card reader slot and see if this solves the problem.
-
check if the card reader is disabled in BIOS settings. At the first screen after a restart, look for a key to press for “BIOS” or “Settings”. Verify that the card reader has not been disabled in the BIOS settings.
Let me know how it goes.
Cheers.

thanks for your reply
your check recommendations was don
- There is no listing into device manager for IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
- the SD card it self is ok and working in other PC’s
- concerning the card reader slot, I believe it should be ok and was working ok as my HP Spectre x360 is a brand new :smileyembarrassed:
- Bios was upgrade from (F.13 Rev.A / Jan 15, 2018) to (F.14 Rev.A / Jan 24, 2018) as My HP page recommendation
- There is no mention or reference for SD card also no option [enable] or [diable] in BIOS [F.14 Rev.A]
I want remind you that the Realtek Card Reader disappear immediately after upgrade to v1709 for windows 10 and the driver available for download in My HP Spectre x360 page is only for (Windows 10 v1703)
Thanks

I want remind you that the Realtek Card Reader disappear immediately after upgrade to v1709 for windows 10 and the driver available for download in My HP page is for (Windows 10 v1703) only
Thanks for your advice .. but .. I believe it is a problem of (Realtek SD Card Reader driver) become not suitable or not compatible, after upgrade the windows 10 from (v1703 to v1709)
Note the fact that the (Realtek SD Card Reader) was working properly with the original windows 10 v1703 built in (HP Spectre x360) and disappear after the upgrade to windows 10 v1709
conclusion
This is a responsibility of (HP as manufacturer of laptop SPECTRE) which the SD card reader is included in its (HP Spectre x360) , to coordinate with (Realtek the producer of the SD card reader) to create a driver compatible for (Windows 10 v1709) and compatible with (HP Spectre x360)
Other wise HP reputation on the edge
Thanks

As most of HP users are upgrade to (windows 10 1709)
I notes that a lot of drivers offered from HP for (HP Spectre 13-ae000 x360 Convertible PCHP Spectre 13-ae000 x360 Convertible PC) are still for (windows 10 1703)
- Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Client Driver (Windows 10 v1703)
- Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver (Windows 10 v1703)
- Intel Serial IO Driver (Windows 10 v1703)
- Intel Software Guard Extensions Device (SGX) Driver (Windows 10 v1703)
- Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver (Windows 10 v1703)
- Intel Virtual Buttons Driver (Windows 10 v1703)
- Realtek Card Reader Driver (Windows 10 v1703)
The question is …. When we expect to update these Drivers in order to solve the incompatibility between (HP Spectre 13-ae000 x360 Convertible PCHP Spectre 13-ae000 x360 Convertible PC) and hardware & software built in
Specially that HP upgrade BIOS twice from F13 To F14 than to F!5 in short period which indicates of something going wrong
Thanks
