This laptop was designed for Vista. I bought it second-hand with Win 7 64-bit installed. It now runs Win 10 64-bit as a result of free upgrade. I'm very happy with it. Only use it for browsing and email mainly.
The built-in sd card reader (right hand side above double USB slot) is intermittent. The card(s) work fine in cameras etc and can be read Ok using connection via USB cables.
Recently laptop crashed (a very rare occurrence) when trying to format a new card.
After the crash, the reader stopped working for a few days. At present the reader IS suddenly working but i've no idea why or even when it might go down again. The card that seemed to have caused the crash appears to have been formatted even though there was a crash.
I cannot discover either the manufacturer of the card reader nor the correct driver, despite endless on-line searches, because of course HP no longer supports this machine and I've no idea what the driver is called.
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Is that not the Smart card reader which I assume is different to the SD card reader?
As I understand it, a Smart Card goes in the other bigger slot.
This is the confusion that surrounds me.
The HP tech spec I have for this laptop calls the SD card reader a 'media reader' presumably to differentiate it from the Smart Card?

Yes I am thanks.
More info for you:
I have inserted a card and I see the following in Device manager:
Under USB Controllers, 'USB mass storage device' which shows driver as 'windows\system32\driver\usbstor.sys'
Also, under 'Disk Drives' I see 'HP USB20 HS-COMBO USB Device' which reveals drivers as in attached screen shot:
so Win 10 is providing the driver(s) ?
The next question is, if the slot stops working again, what do I need to do as I get no reaction from the computer of course and these items do not appear in Device manager and there is nothing in msinfo to show there is any problem?
Thank you for your assistance so far.
