Hi

I have a HP Envy 17-cw0009na 4K Laptop 2023, the SSD is enclosed within a metal dish and cover i have upgraded the SSD to a Samsung EVO 2TB  would it be ok to not replace the metal cover so that air can flow around the hard drive it also feels a little tight ?

What is the metal cover there for ?

Thank you

Steve

Make sure the 2tb drive works before reassembling.

If the metal dish has a thermal pad then it servers as a cooler.  If not then it is an RF shield that possibly is not needed.

I assume the 2tb nvme did not have a heat shield or you removed it to make the chip fit.

Those 2tb run hot, if the metal dish is only good for RF shielding I recommend you replace it with a copper heat sink like this

The top thermal layer could be left out if that lid cannot fit.

Hi, @Steve767

Below is the link to your notebook's user guides page.

HP Envy 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cw0000 - Setup and User Guides | HP® Support

Chapter 5, pages 41 - 43 of the maintenance and service guide lets you know what the metal cover is for and how to properly remove and replace the SSD.

It provides a heat shield for your notebook's SSD.

There is also a service teardown video for your notebook.

The SSD removal and replacement procedure starts at minute 4:56.
