My laptop has SSD that is rated for up to 7000 mb/s(It's gen 4 according to hwinfo) read speed and yet it's only reaching about half that at about 3000 mb/s. I wondered if my pcie version was 3 gen which would explain it. However, it is pcie 4 gen. I look at the system summary and apparently it should work at twice the speed. The advanced bios for my model appears to be locked, and I don't know how to access in the event where that must be done. Write speed is similarly low at about 2200 mb/s. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

@NomadV2, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding SSD Speed on HP OMEN Gaming Laptop!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
If your HP OMEN Gaming Laptop is equipped with an SSD that supports read speeds up to 7000 MB/s but is only achieving speeds around 3000 MB/s, there are several factors to consider:
BIOS and Firmware Updates: Ensure that your laptop's BIOS and SSD firmware are updated. Occasionally, manufacturers release updates that resolve compatibility or performance issues.
Check NVMe Drivers: Make sure you're using the latest NVMe drivers. You can check HP's support website for any specific driver updates or try the SSD manufacturer's website.
Power Settings: Ensure that your power settings are not limiting the performance. You might want to set your power plan to 'High Performance' to ensure maximum performance.
System Configuration: Confirm that all settings related to PCIe lanes are correctly configured. This might involve checking the BIOS settings, but if BIOS features are locked, you may need to contact HP Support for further assistance.
Disk Health and Utilization: Use a disk utility tool to check the health of the SSD. High disk usage or health issues can impact performance.
Background Processes: Ensure that there are no background processes or applications that could be impacting disk performance.
Benchmarking Tools: Use multiple benchmarking tools to ensure that the issue isn't with the tool but with actual performance. Sometimes discrepancies can arise from different benchmarking methodologies.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi @NomadV2,
It’s great that your SSD is running on PCIe Gen 4 x4 — that rules out a major bottleneck. Since BIOS options are limited on your model, here are a couple more things you can try:
Thermal Throttling: Check if your SSD is getting too hot during benchmarks. High temps can reduce performance.
SSD Placement: If your laptop has multiple M.2 slots, the one in use may not be the primary Gen 4-capable slot.
If our solution hit the spot, please click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left as that would make our day!
Take care, and have an incredible day ahead!
