I want to get a 500Gb-1Tb SSD to replace the brick I currently have

What do I need to ask for ?

e,g, is it 2.5 inch or 3.5?

SATA - what version ?

anything else that might bite me if I don't get it right?

Any brands better than others?

Thanks in advance.

Here is the Service Manual:

Manual

Start on p. 42 for removal of the rear cover and then p. 50 illustrates removal of the hard drive. You want a 2.5 inch SATA SSD. Anything now on the market that is not sold as "vintage" will be SATA-3. Every hard drive and memory manufacturer makes one of these. The cream of the crop is a Samsung 860 Evo but there are lots of good ones: WD Blue, Adata, Sandisk, etc. There is a bit of a price war on 2.5 inch SATA SSDs and they are much cheaper than a year ago. So you can shop on price.

I see you are Down Under so eBay Australia or amazon Australia are good sources.

Just place the SSD where the hard drive is now. Hook it up the same way. We can help with software migration reinstall if you need that. The biggest risk is overthinking it and following some out of date instructions on the internet from the early days of SSDs. No need to adjust anything in the BIOS.

Post back with any questions and please accept as solution if this is the info you needed.
