You are on the right track. The Liteon M.2 you have is the SATA variety and the Samsung 960 Pro is a PCIe/NVME type disk

Two types, fit in same slot. You can use either type. Two types, fit in same slot. You can use either type.

So the one you have is a 3-prong form factor like on the left and the 960 Pro will look like the one on the right.

The two different types of devices fit in the same kind of slot and in your case the keys inside the slot are set up to understand and work with EITHER kind. Not true of all laptops with an M.2 slot, but true of yours.

Heres the Service Manual:

See p. 38. The SSD installs in the lower right corner right above and parallel to the hard drive.

Now for the somewhat negative report. Lots of folks have reported here that the Samsung 960 Pro is just not working with HP laptops. The part recommended by HP:

512 GB 2280 M2 PCIe 3x4SS NVMe TLC PA 847110-004

is a Samsung PM961 or an SM951

HP used to sell them for a very good price but recently has tripled the price and they are on backorder anyway.

I have actually done this upgrade and installation on 3 different HP laptops so do have some experience to go with reading the manual.

Post back with any more questions.
