SSD and RAM Upgrade

Hi friends, I am using the HP Notebook 15-dy1059ms with Product Number 1Q0U5UA#ABA. My SSD size is 512GB and the RAM is 16GB. Please, I have two questions. Firstly, Can I upgrade the SSD to a Samsung 980 Pro 2TB SSD PCIe NVMe Gen 4 M.2. Secondly, what is the maximum size of RAM I can upgrade the Notebook to and what specifications should the upgrade have, if possible? I will really appreciate it if these questions are answered. Thank you.

Hi:

Your notebook's M.2 slot is only PCIe Gen 3.

The 2 TB Samsung 980 Pro should work fine but it will not get anywhere near its maximum advertised read/write speeds.

Below is the link to the service manual.  Chapter 1 has the memory upgrade info.

HP only has the manual for the older 15-dy0xxx model series.

You can do this to see how much memory your notebook can actually support:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

The memory specification HP installed in your notebook is DDR4-2666 MHz.

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply. It means it would be better to go for a cheaper Gen 3 SSD like Samsung 970 EVO Plus (2TB) than to go for Samsung 980 Pro which is Gen 4.  Just to get some clarification, I noticed that both Samsung SSDs mentioned above have a Form factor of 2280 while my SSD has a form factor of 2242. Does this difference in form factors affect anything? Thanks once again.

You're very welcome.

If you are not planning to transfer the Gen 4 SSD to a newer model PC one day that supports Gen 4 SSD's, it would be a waste of money to buy the 980 Pro.

Your notebook's current NVMe SSD is 2280.

If you google the SSD part numbers listed in chapter 3 of the service manual, you will find that they are all 2280.

I took the first one listed for example:  L63572-001

You can even google the drive model number of the drive you have now.

It has to be M.2 2280.

Also I googled that "2242" as a module code means that the module is 22 mm wide and 42 mm long, while "2280" denotes a module 22 mm wide and 80 mm long. Basically, my fear is buying an SSD (in this case 2280 form factor) that may not fit into my HP notebook PC. Thank you.

Hi:

I see what you mean, but that just can't be.

Open up your notebook and check before buying another SSD.

I'm sure it is 2280, and if not, then there should be a hold down screw further away from the slot to accomodate a 2280 SSD.
