Hi,

Related discussion: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Adding-a-ssd-to-a-Pavilion-15-...

I have HP 15-au018wm laptop. I would like to install an SSD myself but opening the base of the laptop looks very tedious and risky for a newbie like me.

1. How much of speed is lost by installing SSD into CD/DVD drive? 20%?30%?

2. Can the laptop be booted from CD/DVD? I read here

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/SSD-caddy-replacing-optical-dr...

that default boot from CD/DVD is not possible but I see that in the boot options

3. What optical caddy should I buy? Will a 9.5 inch fit well for 15-au018wm?

4. What other options apart from CD/DVD, Hard drive and M.2?

Thank you for your help. Have a great day

1. How much of speed is lost by installing SSD into CD/DVD drive? 20%?30%?

You are going from SATA III (SSD) to SATA II or even SATA I (ODD) that means speed loss in theory is 50% or more.

2. Can the laptop be booted from CD/DVD? I read here

Yes, with a bootable CD or a DVD

3. What optical caddy should I buy? Will a 9.5 inch fit well for 15-au018wm?

It uses 9.0mm tray load - SATA - Fixed (not modular) therefore you need 9mm caddy

4. What other options apart from CD/DVD, Hard drive and M.2?

Are you willing to open the case ? If yes then swapping HDD with a standard SSD is the good choice.

Regards.

Thank you for valuable input. Considering all the things you mentioned, i will swap HDD with SSD. I will find a technician around my place but try my hand before going there.

I did a similar thing for my hp probook 6460 (runs solid after many years) myself. It was pretty easy as the bottom part can be opened without any tools exposing RAM and HDD.

The only thing I am afraid with au018wm is propping up bezel attached to keyboard to pull the base apart. I will let you know how it goes.

Thank you for helping me out here.
