HP Notebook - 15t-ay000 CTO (ENERGY STAR)

Looking for recommended SSD brand and model to replace HDD in HP Laptop Pavilion 15t-ay000 CTO. Will the existing connections to the HDD work with the replacement SSD? Do I need something else for connection? Not easy to determine by web sites.

Hi:

Since your notebook came with a 2.5" mechanical hard drive, the M.2 slot/parts to add one are not present.

Only the 15-ayXXX notebooks that came with a M.2 SATA SSD from the factory have the M,2 slot.

IMHO, there would be absolutely no reason to try and find the parts you need (which don't include the screws where needed), when the 2.5" Samsung 870 drive will outperform any M.2 SATA SSD that I know of.

Currently the fastest M,2 SATA SSD that I know of is the M.2 SATA SSD that I originally recommended (WD Blue SA510).

Now, if the notebook supported NVMe SSD's that might be a different story, since NVMe SSD's have much faster read/write speeds than SATA SSD's have.

Hi:

Yes, you can direct swap the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" SSD by removing the hardware attached to the 2.5" drive and using it on the 2.5" SSD.

I recommend the Western Digital Blue SA510 2.5" SATA SSD's in a storage capacity that meets your needs and budget.

Below is the link to the service manual:

OK, how about this one: SAMSUNG 870 EVO SATA III SSD 1TB 2.5” SSD - is it equal or better than the Western Digital? Thank you

HP Recommended

Yes, that drive would be fine too.

It has a slightly faster write speed.

530 MBPS vice 520 MBPS offered by the WD Blue.

Will go with the Samsung model. Looking at the manual brings up more questions - see pages 31 and 35

Items 13 and 14: is there another location for a SSD and no larger than 256 GB? Not clear about what this is for. Should I ignor? Thank you

Looking to find the subject item. Not an easy web search. Replaced the HDD with new Samsung SSD 870 EVO and found no sourcce for the mounting bracket or frame and set screws. The frame with the HDD is esentially revitted to the HDD device. I used a small piece of Gorilla tape to hold down the SSD in place. Otherwise it works, but not a permanent installation.

I've never read any posts were anyone was unable to use the mounting hardware from the original 2.5" mechanical hard drive on a new one.

Unless HP changed how things are, there is a procedure to remove the assembly from the hard drive in the service manual.

Yes, I tried to remove the four screws holding the two brackets on either side of the HDD, but they are so tight that I cannot remove. Looked at the diagram again on page 62 of the manual. That is the correct configuration. I might have to take the HDD to a computer shop to properly remove those Phillips screws. Thank you
