I have hp pavilion 15 ec-0101ax laptop and I want to add ssd in its extra slot. It supports NVMe Pcle 3x4 (3rd gen 4lane) SSD . Can I upgrade it with NVMe Pcle 4.0 (4th gen) SSD ? Does it support  WD Blue SN 580  500 GB SSD which is 4th gen ?

Yes, the WD Blue SN580 will work fine in your notebook but it will not run at its maximum advertised read/write speeds from the Gen 3 NVMe slot.

 

The table shows the maximum advertised transfer speeds each PCIe slot generation provides:
