Hi,
I want to upgrade the 256GB SSD (Hynix SC313) that was shipped with my Pavilion 14-ce05xx. My question is whether the motherboard supports multi-lane PCI SSDs - such as the Samsung EVO970 - or would I be better off saving some money and going for a lower spec SSD?
Thanks!

Hi,
You can upgrade the M2 PCIe NVMe drive to one of your desired capacity (no limit to capacity). I believe the notebook is gen 3x2 so even if the Samsung 970 Evo Plus will not reach its full speed I would go for one of these. I mean max speed is not everything unless you are transferring large files all day from one PCIe drive to another. However, access time and other specs make the 970 Evo the best drive for the notebook. Naturally, if you insert a Crucial P1 (cheaper), will you really notice the difference? Probably not.
On page 68 of the service manual, you can see the steps to install the drive

Hope it helps,
David

Hi David,
Thanks for the quick response. I downloaded SiSoftware Sandra Lite that I had seen referenced in another post and from what I can see the Hynix SC313 in this laptop is SATA connected rather than PCIe. Here is what it tells me about the PCI/PCIe environment:
Computer Buses
Interface Version : 2.30
PCI Bus(es) : 4
PCIe Bus(es) : 3
System Bus 0
Type : PCI
Multiplier : 1x
System Bus 1
Type : PCIe 3.0 x4 2.5Gbps
Multiplier : 3x
Bridge : Intel Sunrise Point-LP PCI Express Root Port #1
System Bus 2
Type : PCIe 3.0 x1 2.5Gbps
Multiplier : 3x
Bridge : Intel Sunrise Point-LP PCI Express Root Port #5
Device Connected : HP RTL8821CE 802.11ac PCIe Wireless Network Adapter
System Bus 3
Type : PCIe 3.0 x1 2.5Gbps
Multiplier : 3x
Bridge : Intel Sunrise Point-LP PCI Express Root Port #6
Device Connected : HP RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
So I see no disk connected here, but I see System Bus 1 as a PCIe 3.0 x4 with nothing connected to it - does this port connect to to M.2 port in which case the Samsung 970 might be worth a try as it supports x4 - otherwise I might as well go for the Crucial P1 as that appears to be x2 - still an improvement over SATA - but is half the price of the Samsung for the same capacity.
Thanks again!
