Solved!

SSD upgrade for 5SK15UA

HP Recommended
Pavilion CS1XXX
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, wondering if someone can clear this up for me. I'm needing to upgrade my sons laptop, and trying to decide between installing the intel Optane memory (16or 32GB) and leave the HDD (1TB 5400RPM), or just add an SSD.

Does the M2 slot in this laptop support a full SSD, or is it limited / configured just for the Optane memory?

Would it support a PCIe 3.0 x 4, or just PCIe 3.0 x 2?

Thanks for any help

@Runsch , welcome to the forum.

If it were me, I would add the M.2, SSD.  The hard drive is only 5400 RPM.  Even with the Optane memory I don't believe that you will get the increase in system performance.

Here is the Maintenance and Service Guide for the laptop: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06248419

On Page 54 is a list of compatible M.2, SSD's and instructions on removing and installing them.  Here is the 512 GB M.2 in HP PartSurfer: https://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=L25329-001

If you want to buy another brand you can use the specifications as an example of what you need.

Good luck!

@Runsch

The specs of your machine is

            https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06243129

It has 1 TB 5400 rpm 2.5" SATA and 16GB of 2280 PCIe3x2 NVMe 3D XP part #  L27309-001 (Optane)

Yes, it supports full 2280 single sided M.2 NVMe SSD and as you can see PCIe 3x2 is a good bet.

You have to disable Optane using Intel tool before replacing it with a normal M.2 SSD drive.

Updated: Sorry, @old_geekster is faster than me,

Regards.

@banhien, you answered a part that I forgot.  I was coming back to add the other information.

I was going to add the M.2's recommended by Crucial Memory: https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/pavilion-15-cs1063cl

Once you disable Optane you can use the hard drive for storage.  Here is a HP Knowledge Base article to help you transition from the hard drive to the M.2: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Knowledge-Base/Upgrading-Desktop-or-Laptop-to-a-SSD/ta-p/73048...
