I recently purchased and installed a Samsung 980 SSD 1TB PCle 3.0x4, NVMe M.2 2280, Internal Solid State Drive including their Magician software/driver, but the computer doesn't see it. When I initially installed and booted it seemed like the computer wanted to boot from the new drive but it was not yet formatted or anything and I got a message saying it needed to reset some settings, then booted normally. Went into the BIOS but could not see the new drive or anything for setting it up. Called Samsung and they thought my machine was just unable to work with the NVME, but have seen installed on other machines so maybe just not this version. Would like to find out which SSD would be compatible with my system.

Hi, @NukeSparky
All HP notebook and desktop PC's that I know of have a M.2 slot that looks like it will support a NVMe SSD.
You have to read chapter 1 of the service manual to see what type of M.2 SSD is supported.
Some slots support NVMe only, some slots support SATA only and some support both.
As you can see from reading the info in chapter 1 of your notebook's service manual, only SATA M.2 SSD's are supported.
The Samsung 860 M.2 will fit and work in the slot just fine.
The notch that does not have an opposing key will just not use the contacts on that side of the M.2 slot.
Personally, I would go with the Western Digital Blue SA 510 SATA M.2 SSD which has slightly better performance than the Samsung 860.
Probably costs less too and has the same warranty.

The series supports M.2 SATA SSD's, please return it and buy other drive such as Samsung 860 M.2 SSD.
Regards.

Really appreciate your response! The pin configuration on the 860 looks like it has 4 pins on the left, 20 pins in the middle and 5 pins on the right. My PCI slot appears to match the 980, which has 29 pins on the left and 5 pins on the right. Is there another SSD with that pin configuration that would work, or would the 860 (with 2 gaps in the pin connection)actually work?
