Hi:
Yes, the regular 980 will work fine.
Chapter 5 page 34 of the service manual indicates that you need a PM 2.0×2.4 broad head screw for the SSD if there isn't one.
NB_MSG_Rockets_1_2_Cons_923498-003 (hp.com)
PM2.0 = Philips Metric 2 mm in diameter 2.4 = 2.4 mm in length.
Check Ace Hardware, Home Depot, or your local PC repair shop and see if they have any that match that description.

Samsung 980 runs at higher speed. You can install it to your machine if you wish but it won't run at higher existing drive
You can use the following tool to see what is current speed of its drive.
Regards.

Hi, @ReyDel
It depends on what model Samsung 980 NVMe SSD you buy.
The 'regular' 980 is still PCIe 3 x 4.

The Samsung 980 Pro is more expensive and is PCIe 4 x 4.

@paul_tikkanen
I had bought the regular 980.
Not the pro.
Will the regular still work ?
I also just learned I'm going to need a screw since it didn't come with one. The person who I spoke with at the store did say there are some models that have a spare screw inside the laptop. However they not sure if my model would- That Ill have to look once i get inside.
So I'm now also looking the screw.
