HP EliteBook 2730p
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an EliteBook 2730p that I have upgraded to use Windows 10.  I have also upgraded the system to use a solid state drive and have 4 GB of RAM, so it is performing well under WIndows 10.

I installed SP54180 in hoped of enabling the auto-rotation functionality of the screen (it is a convertible).  When the driver was first loaded, it seemed to be working properly, but after a reboot it stopped.  I also noticed that in the Monitors section of Device Manager, there are two entries showing:

  • Generic Non-PnP Monitor
  • Generic PnP Monitor

When I turn the monitors position to either laptop or standard mode, the screen will briefly flash, so it seems to be recognizing the change.  However, it only redraws the screen again in landscape mode.

I am using a resolution of 1280 x 800.

I have the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel software installed,  And the display adapter in use is the Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (8.15.10.2413, rel 06/3/2011).

I am able to use the Hot Keys configured in the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel to switch the modes manually.  Using the screen rotation button on the side of the monitor usually causes the screen to go blank, and the system appears to be using a different monitor.  If I attach to a second, external monitor, the desktop is visible there.  And if I use the CTRL-ALT-F3 hotkey (Enable Built-In Display), the desktop will reappear on the screen.

I believe that the identification of two unique displays by the system is one of the issues, one appears as "Built-In Display", and the other as "Monitor".  When I looks at these in the Windows Display settings and choose Identify, the main screen will show "1|2" on the laptops screen, and a 3rd on an external monitor.

Any input on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks In Advance,

- Michael

I completed all available Windows updates to the system.  Upon completion of the update process, the rotation was no longer working,  The video driver had updated again to the newer version that does not seem to have the auto-rotation functionality that works for the 2730p system.  I reinstalled the old driver, opting to overwrite the newer version, and everything appears to be working properly again.

So, if youre trying to get your auto-rotation functionality working on a HP EliteBook 2730p, the driver found in SP45572 is what you are looking for.  You can find it here:

I was using the Hot Keys to rotate the screen layout manually before flipping the screen.  But know when I switch from Landscape to Portait, it initially does this successfully.  As soon as I rotate the screen physically, it switches back to landscape!

😄

So obviously whatever hardware is supposed to detect the screen change is working, just not the way I am hoping it would!

I may have fussed with too many things.  I am thinking a fresh OS install and reload of the drive for the screen might be a good idea at this point (the machine is not far beyond initial setup).

Thanks Again In Advance,

I did the following:

  1. Reinstalled Windows 10  After installation, a single monitor existed on the system (Generic PnP Monitor).  Rotation did not function.
  2. Installed the video driver in sp54180.  Upon completion and reboot, there was now a second monitor installed on the device.  Rotation did not operate properly.
  3. Installed the video driver in sp45572 (older).  Confirmed that I wanted to overwrite the existing driver.  Everything appears to be working properly!  Rotation is functioning properly, and the Rotation button on the side of the display does not cause the screen to go blank!

For whatever reason, I believe that it is necessary to stick with this version of the video drive if you intend on using the screen rotation functionaloty of the laptop.  I will wait a few days (and in the meant time, install all the updates), and then report back if this was still functioning as expected.

Thanks!
