Hi All

Since a Windows 11 update back in November, my HP Pavilion 14-ce35xxxx, the screen keeps flickering until I uninstall the graphics card and reboot, the laptop will work OK until it is switched off, then it all start again, I experienced this a couple of years ago and somehow it sorted itself out, does anyone have any ideas why this is happening and how I can solve the problem from reoccurring

Adjust Display Settings

Misconfigured refresh rates can cause flickering:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings.
  2. Ensure the refresh rate is set to the recommended value for your screen (typically 60 Hz).

Check for Windows Updates

Occasionally, Microsoft releases patches to resolve update-related issues:

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates.

Update BIOS

An outdated BIOS can also cause compatibility issues:

  1. Visit the HP Support website.
  2. Search for your HP Pavilion 14 model and download the latest BIOS.
  3. Follow the instructions carefully to update the BIOS.

Run Diagnostics

To rule out hardware issues:

  1. Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter the HP Hardware Diagnostics.
  2. Run a Display Test to ensure the screen itself isn't malfunctioning.

Roll Back Windows Update

If the issue persists, consider rolling back the problematic update:

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history.
  2. Select Uninstall updates and remove the most recent updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Ishy216,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Screen flickering after a Windows update often stems from driver conflicts, particularly with the graphics card. Here's a step-by-step guide to address the issue on your HP Pavilion 14.

Check the Display Driver

The issue likely involves the graphics driver. To fix it:

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Restart the computer and press F8 (or use the advanced startup options in Windows settings).
  • Select Safe Mode with Networking.

Update the Graphics Driver:

  • Open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start button.
  • Expand Display adapters.
  • Right-click your graphics card (e.g., Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA) and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for drivers or visit the manufacturer's website for the latest driver.

Uninstall Problematic Driver:

  • If updating doesn't help, uninstall the driver:
    • Right-click the driver and choose Uninstall device.
    • Check the box to delete the driver software for the device.
  • Restart your PC and allow Windows to install the default driver automatically.

Prevent Windows From Automatically Updating Drivers

Sometimes Windows Update reinstalls a problematic driver. To stop this:

  1. Open Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings.
  2. In the Hardware tab, click Device Installation Settings.
  3. Select No to stop Windows from downloading manufacturer apps and custom icons.

Perform a Clean Install of the Driver

A clean install removes remnants of older drivers that may conflict:

  1. Download Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) from the official site.
  2. Run it in Safe Mode to completely uninstall the driver.
  3. Install the latest driver manually from the manufacturer's website (e.g., Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA).
