Is this a legit hp ask or have I been hacked? I only have a yes (recommended) and no option with a qr code I am wary about scanning

However, it’s always good to verify whether the request is legitimate. Here’s what you can do:

 

Steps to Verify the Request

Check the Source of the Message

  • If this prompt appeared while using HP Support Assistant or HP Smart, it’s likely legitimate.
  • If it popped up unexpectedly while browsing or using third-party software, be cautious.

Verify the QR Code URL Without Scanning

  • If you right-click the QR code (or press and hold on mobile), it may give you an option to “Copy Link.”
  • Paste it into a text editor (not a browser) and check if it leads to an HP domain (e.g., hp.com, support.hp.com).

Confirm in HP Support

  • Open HP’s official warranty check page here.
  • If the request is genuinely from HP, you can enter your serial number directly on their official site rather than through the prompt.

Scan for Malware

  • If you suspect it’s a fake prompt, run a Windows Security scan to rule out potential threats.
  • Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Quick Scan.
