HP Envy x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-ac0000 (8Z1Z8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

This was bought as a brand new laptop. For some unknown reason, time to time (not sure why and when) the screen brightness feature dies. No matter if I do it from keyboard shortcut or from windows, regardless increase or decrease, brightness remains unchanged.

So when I Google'd the issue, some users suggested that updating display adapter to one of the existing drivers should work. And it did. So every once in a while when the screen brightness becomes unresponsive, I open Device Manager on Windows, go to Display Adapter, right click Intel(R) Graphics, hit Update Driver, and so on to select the other available adapter so that I update the driver to give me ability to adjust the brightness.

This is pretty annoying, considering that this is a brand new laptop and I paid $900 for it. Any thoughts on how to fix it for good? Thank you.

Hi @CaMe1986,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a driver issue related to the Intel graphics adapter on your HP Envy x360 16. Here are a few steps you can take to potentially resolve the problem more permanently.

Update Drivers Automatically:

  • Intel Driver & Support Assistant: Download and install the Intel Driver & Support Assistant from Intel’s official website. This tool can automatically detect and install the latest drivers for your Intel graphics adapter.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Sometimes Windows updates include important driver updates. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for any pending updates.

Reinstall the Graphics Driver:

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand the Display adapters section.
  • Right-click on your Intel Graphics adapter and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically upon reboot.

HP Support Website:

  • Visit the HP Support website and search for your specific model. Download and install any updated drivers available for your laptop.

Power Management Settings:

  • Sometimes power management settings can affect display behavior. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings and make sure the brightness settings are correctly configured.

BIOS Update:

  • Check if there’s a BIOS update available for your laptop on the HP Support website. Sometimes BIOS updates can fix hardware compatibility issues.

System File Checker:

  • Run the System File Checker to check for and repair any corrupted system files:
    1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
