Good morning everyone,
I'd like to use my laptop's M.2 auxiliary port to install a secondary hard drive since I don't use the WWAN module.
Could you recommend a compatible NVMe SSD hard drive for my laptop HP Elitebook 640 G10?
Thanks.
Carlo

Hi, Carlo:
According to the service manual--chapter 5, pages 46 - 47 , the notebook will support a M.2 2230 NVMe SSD in the WWAN card slot but it needs an adapter called a solid state drive support kit (N00354-001)
But I don't know why you couldn't directly install a M.2 2242 NVMe SSD in the WWAN slot.
The intel specs for the card indicate that it is a M.2 3042 form factor--being 8 mm wider than a standard 2242 SSD.
But the actual slot is 22 mm wide, it's just the body of the card above the slot connector that is wider.
So, I'm thinking that a standard M.2 2242 NVMe SSD should fit just like the WWAN card would fit without the need of an adapter.
Something like this:
There are plenty of others to choose from in different storage capacities, but HP offered a 256 GB drive in the model series.

Hi Paul,
recently i have bought these nvme ssd:
KingSpec 256GB M.2 2242 SSD PCIe 3.0 - Velocità di lettura fino a 3500MB/s, M.2 NVMe Gen 3 SSD - 3D NAND Meoria Flash, Compatible con PC/Desktop/Laptop (256GB)
MULTIMEDIA Shopping 128Gb M2 NVMe Gen 4x4 PCIe SSD Internal Solid State Drive Compatible with 2230 and 2280 Slot with Adapter Included, High Speed Data Transfer, Italy Warranty
I tried both SSDs, which fit perfectly in the slot, but the laptop won't turn on.
The 2242 doesn't require an adapter; it just snaps into place using the mounting screw, while the 2230's card is shorter.
Can you recommend an NVMe SSD that's definitely good enough to let my laptop boot?
Thanks.
Carlo

Hi, Carlo:
Unfortunately, I would have no idea what drive to recommend since I would have assumed that any M.2 2242 NVMe SSD would have worked.
I doubt that the M.2 2230 with an adapter would be the only kind that would work.
It makes no sense.

M.2 NVMe SSDs have a label attached on the one side of the disks that shows a manufacturer's name, model number, serial number, etc. . .
Did you have to install the NVMe SSDs with the label side of the disks being down? If so, your M.2 slot is B-keyed.
A B-keyed M.2 slot may only support a WWAN card.
