Hi @CrankyMan777,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A shaky or jumpy cursor on your HP 15.6-inch Laptop PC can be due to several factors, from touchpad sensitivity settings to potential hardware issues. Here are some steps to try.

  • Adjust Touchpad Sensitivity: Sometimes, a high sensitivity setting can cause the cursor to jump. Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad and adjust the sensitivity setting to a lower level.
  • Disable Tap to Click: Disabling this option can help in some cases if the touchpad is overly sensitive. You can disable it from Settings > Devices > Touchpad by unchecking “Tap to click.”
  • Check for Windows Updates: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and make sure your system is up to date. Sometimes, system updates include fixes for touchpad issues.
  • Test in Safe Mode: Boot into Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. If the cursor behaves normally in Safe Mode, the issue might be caused by third-party software.
  • Check for BIOS/UEFI Update: Go to the HP Support website, enter your laptop model, and check if there is a BIOS update available. Sometimes updating the BIOS can resolve touchpad or system issues.
  • External Mouse Test: Try using an external mouse to see if the problem is exclusive to the touchpad. If the external mouse works smoothly, it might indicate a hardware issue with the touchpad.
  • Hardware Check: If the above steps don't work, there could be a hardware issue with the touchpad. If you're comfortable, you can try gently cleaning the touchpad area.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
