It's not a physical problem, both shift keys don't work, I've tried installing new drivers, updating the current one, turning off sticky keys, l've even formatted the laptop 3 times before yet the problem stays, what can I do?

Hi @sulanku9,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Sorry for the inconvenience caused and don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • What exact HP laptop model are you using?
  • Which version of Windows is currently installed?
  • Do the Shift keys fail everywhere (like in Notepad, Word, browsers), or only in certain applications?
  • Have you noticed if other modifier keys (Ctrl, Alt) work normally?

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try while we gather more information:

  • Test with an external keyboard: If an external USB keyboard works fine, that helps us confirm whether the issue is hardware-related on the built-in keyboard.
  • Check language/keyboard layout settings: Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region and ensure the correct keyboard layout is selected (e.g., US QWERTY).
  • Run HP Hardware Diagnostics: Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly, then choose F2 for diagnostics. Run a keyboard test to see if the Shift keys register.
  • Safe Mode test: Boot into Safe Mode and check if the Shift keys work there. If they do, it may point to a software conflict.
  • BIOS update/reset: updating or resetting BIOS settings can resolve keyboard issues.

I hope this helps.
