It has been a while since I have done any updates for my laptop due to spending so much time on my work devices. Thought I would do some maintenance on my personal laptop since I am having some minor issues on my it, such as the awful Yahoo Search engine that overrides my Google chrome when using the chrome browser. I use Edge to avoid the disruption, but I prefer Chrome. While in HP support, I checked for software updates and received only 1 update, and before it showed me the update there was a statement that stated there is update that needs to be removed because it was no longer valid. I assumed that meant do not use it at all. I did get another update that says to download it and now I am confused because it has a similar use and want to be clear that this is an update to what was removed. I admit that I have become accustomed to these matters being handled by my employers IT Team and had stopped using my laptop for minor things.

Hi @HollyWoodsDST,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're trying to keep your personal laptop updated after a while, which is great. Let me break down what you need to know.

BIOS Update:

  • HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Process): This update is crucial because the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is responsible for starting up your computer and managing communication between the operating system and the hardware. Keeping your BIOS updated can help with system stability, security, and compatibility with new hardware or software.
  • Why It Matters: If your HP support tool recommended this update, it's generally a good idea to install it, especially if you're experiencing minor issues on your laptop. However, it's important to ensure the update is meant for your specific laptop model and that you follow the instructions carefully. A BIOS update can be riskier than regular software updates because if something goes wrong during the update process (like a power failure), it could cause more significant issues.

Confusion with the Removed Update:

  • Message About Removal: The message about a previous update needing to be removed likely refers to an older BIOS or another system update that is no longer relevant or has been superseded by a newer update. It doesn't necessarily mean you should avoid updating; it just means the HP Support Assistant identified and removed an outdated update.

Action Steps:

Check the Update Details: Before proceeding, verify that the BIOS update is for your specific laptop model. The HP Support Assistant should automatically detect the correct version, but it's always good to double-check.

Backup Your Data: Since BIOS updates are more critical than regular updates, ensure you have backed up any important data on your laptop before proceeding.

Proceed with the Update: If everything checks out, go ahead and apply the BIOS update. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully.

Dealing with Yahoo Search Hijack: The issue with Yahoo Search taking over Chrome might be due to a browser hijacker or unwanted extension. After your BIOS update:

  • Check Extensions: Go to Chrome’s settings and remove any suspicious or unknown extensions.
  • Reset Chrome: Consider resetting Chrome settings to their default state to remove any unwanted changes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
