Saw some reasonably priced HP notebooks on the web (HP, Amazon BestBuy). All the units with the silver/grey keyboards seem to have unreadable keycaps. So I went into the local BestBuy store and found that, indeed, these keycaps are virtually unreadable unless the machine is in absolutely perfect lighting. Moving the machine to a dimly lit area where the keyboard backlighting came on rendered all the keycaps illegible. Moving to an area where it was a bit lighter (and the backlighting turned off) yielded the same results. Only when the overhead lighting was almost non-existent and the backlighting was on were the keycaps once again readable. So its either perfect lighting or no lighting (and I'm not computing in the dark, thank you).
Had an engineer actually used a prototype prior to production. Certainly a keyboard with black keycap background would have been much more readable.
Going to buy a Lenovo.

Welcome to the boat. Not just HP, other vendors do the same. I use external keyboards for all my machines until few members of this forum discussed this problem.I have a silver Dell, a silver HP the Dell has this problem but the HP does not because the HP uses black keyboard with white letters
