Anyone know how to extract the files on my HP SimpleSave model MD1000H.  All of my children’s photos and videos are on here and I can’t move them to a new hard drive.

Welcome to the HP Community --

I'm sorry you are in this situation.

There is little good about this story --

  • The hard drives on these units -- for the most part - failed years ago.
  • If the hard drive doesn't fail, the power supply tends to fail after a few more years.
  • The backup software was resident on the drive - silly software was not something that can be easily recovered, downloaded.  Had you thought to copy the software at the time the unit was in use, then that can (might) work to recover the backup software and put it back on the drive.
  • The backups -- if you used the software -- encrypted the data -- and the encryption is specific to that software.
  • The power cord was specific to the hard drive.
  • The whole mess was never meant to be used beyond Windows 7.

If the software is still on the drive,

If you can get a hold of a Windows 7 system,

Plug the drive into the system and see if you can use the software to extract the data.

No Windows 7 ?

Take the drive and power cord to a competent computer tech and ask whether they have a Windows 7 system.

Corrupted?

Take the drive and power cord to a competent computer tech and ask whether they know a decent forensic technician.

Good Luck.
