When I try and connect a Slimtype esAU108 DVD/CD drive to my HP15s -eq1096tu running Windows 10, the drive spins up and down periodically but does not appear in File Explorer and DVDs cannot be played. The drive does appear in Device Manager, and the driver is up to date.
As you've confirmed that modern USB DVD drive works fine with computer that confirm it's a compatibility issue with drive not with the computer.
For more support on that drive you can reach out to our HP Smart Friend Support and our Support Engineers should be able to sort this out. HP Smart Friend Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
