I posted about Smart Check telling me "imminent hard drive failure" & got very good response about how to replace. However, that was 6 weeks ago. My laptop is still chugging along w/o problems. I have not turned it off, but it has done a couple of update installations & restarts. I get the Smart Check message after the restart, but click thru that. Everything in the Windows Defender Security Center, including Device Performance & Health are Green. McAfee is updating normally & telling me everything is OK.  I have only used it on battery long enough for the battery to nearly completely discharge one time. I plugged it back in before it turned off. When I run the Short test I get Failure ID 0USF1G-8KF9NQ-MFGK7A-60XV03. For the Long Test I get Failure ID USF1G-8KF9NQ-MFGK7A-61F503. One additional issue. several months ago, my battery quit fully charging. Sometimes it would do it, but it often went to 70% or 80% & would stop charging. When I run the tests, the battery test always self-cancels. Could there be some connection? I really can't afford the expense of a new HD or laptop at the moment. I'm immediately saving everything to an external drive.  What are the likely scenarios for the HD's demise if I keep pushing it along this way? Am I risking anything by not turning it off?

@PetraS Welcome to HP Community!

Constantly keeping the device on, may heat up the device and cause the drive to die an untimely death, I suggest you turn it off when not in use, that said, as of now the failure ID you've mentioned: 0USF1G-8KF9NQ-MFGK7A-60XV03 has been decoded successfully and it represents the failure code: 303 - Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure.

Before you work on replacing the drive, I suggest you try the below to attempt a fix:

NOTE: If the error message indicates 3F0 error or Boot Device Not Found, determine if your PC has Optane memory installed and configured correctly. See HP Consumer Desktop PCs - Boot Device Not Found (3F0) or Automatic Repair Errors for desktops,HP Consumer Notebook PCs - Boot Device Not Found (3F0) or Automatic Repair Errors for notebooks. For more information about Optane memory, see HP PCs - Installing and Using Intel Optane.

Well... Laptop continued to chug. It got a couple of updates & did restarts w/o issue or Smart Drive messages. Then I got notice for the new big Win10 update. I put it off. Then I got the update telling me support for my edition of Win10 would be ending. I decided to go ahead & see what happened. I let Win10 download. Had to do it twice because the 1st time got interrupted by a power outage caused by lightning. All went along w/o problems. Did numerous restarts w/o problems or messages. Finally, I decided to turn it off & leave it alone for a while. When I turned it back on, I got no Smart Drive messages about imminent Hard Drive Failure. It quickly passed the Short Drive Self-Test, that it had failed before. With the Long Drive Self-Test it has cancelled at 40% & 10%. I have since turned it off & unplugged it during 2 electrical storms today. No messages when starting up. Seems to be running fine.
