Hi @rscar
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I’m sorry you’re having trouble getting your HP Notebook - 15-ay103dx working, especially when HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI shows the Hard Drive Check or SMART Check as “Not Available.”
We’ll work through a few HP diagnostic and recovery checks to determine whether the hard drive is being detected correctly. HP lists this model with a 1 TB 5400-rpm SATA hard drive.
1. Perform an HP power reset
- Turn off the notebook.
- Disconnect the AC adapter.
- Remove any USB devices, memory cards, or other external devices.
- Press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the notebook.
2. Check whether the hard drive is detected in BIOS
- Turn the notebook off.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
- At the HP Startup Menu, press F10 for BIOS Setup.
- Look under the storage/system information section and check whether the internal hard drive is listed.
If the internal drive is not detected in BIOS, the diagnostic utility may also be unable to perform the SMART or Hard Drive test.
3. Try HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI again
- Restart the notebook.
- Immediately press Esc repeatedly.
- Press F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Select Component Tests > Storage or Hard Drive, depending on the diagnostic version available.
- Run the available storage test.
If SMART Check still displays Not Available, note whether another storage test is offered and whether it produces a Failure ID.
HP provides PC Hardware Diagnostics as a troubleshooting option specifically for the HP Notebook - 15-ay103dx.
4. If Windows still starts
Back up your important personal files first. Then visit the official HP Notebook - 15-ay103dx Software and Driver Downloads page and select the Windows version installed on the notebook. HP provides the model-specific software and drivers there.
5. If Windows does not start
If BIOS detects the hard drive but Windows will not load, use the recovery options available for the notebook. HP's support page for this model includes recovery documentation as well as guidance for diagnosing and recovering from drive failures.
If the BIOS itself does not detect the internal hard drive, focus on the drive rather than reinstalling Windows. A drive that is unavailable to the BIOS cannot be tested normally by HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
If you receive a 24-character HP Failure ID from any storage test, please share that code, as it can help identify the specific hardware test result.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
