So this is a passed down HP pavilion g6 laptop which HAS a discrete gpu (not sure about what it is... but it has one probably a 7600m, how do I know? (I opened the **bleep** thing and found a CPU and GPU seperately but windows doesn't show it up (even with the lastest drivers). In system it shows that it has 1 GB of Vram given to the iGPU and windows doesn't even mention the existence of a amd gpu (which there is) but it shows up on device manager (HP had some custom driver? Welp they nuked that page for i don't know how long so how can I get to use my Radeon GPU?

Hi @hizoto

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how confusing and frustrating it must feel to see the discrete GPU physically present but not properly recognized in Windows. Thank you for already checking Device Manager and attempting driver installs — that helps narrow down the situation.

Let’s go through clear steps to get your Radeon GPU working on your HP Pavilion g6.

Steps to Enable and Use the Discrete GPU

Confirm BIOS Settings

  • Restart the laptop and press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  • Look for “Switchable Graphics” or “Hybrid Graphics” options.
  • Ensure the discrete GPU is enabled. Save changes and exit.

Remove Current Graphics Drivers

  • Press Windows + X, select Device Manager.
  • Expand Display adapters, right‑click both Intel and AMD devices, and choose Uninstall device.
  • Restart the laptop.

Install Intel Graphics Driver First

  • Download the Intel HD Graphics driver for your Pavilion g6 from HP’s support page: HP Pavilion g6 Drivers.
  • Install and restart the laptop.

Install AMD Radeon Driver Next

  • Download the AMD Radeon driver for your Pavilion g6 from the same HP support page.
  • Install and restart again.

Verify GPU in Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager and confirm both Intel HD Graphics and AMD Radeon appear under “Display adapters.”
  • Right‑click the AMD Radeon device, select Properties, and check “Device status” shows “This device is working properly.”

Configure Switchable Graphics

  • Right‑click on the desktop, select AMD Radeon Settings (or Catalyst Control Center if older).
  • Assign applications to use either the integrated Intel GPU or the discrete AMD GPU.
  • For demanding tasks (games, design software), set them to use the Radeon GPU.

Test with an Application

  • Launch a graphics‑intensive program.
  • Open Task Manager > Performance tab > GPU to confirm the Radeon GPU is being utilized.

By following these steps, you should be able to restore proper functionality of the discrete Radeon GPU and ensure Windows recognizes it alongside the Intel graphics.
