For some reason all the keys on my keyboard were working with no issues than 3 weeks later the G, J a backspace keys stop working.  I updated the keyboard drivers but that didn't work.  The laptop was not dropped in those 3 weeks so it's very strange how every other key on the keyboard is working just fine except those 3 keys.

Hi @je_brothers,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If certain keys on your HP laptop keyboard have stopped working despite not being physically damaged, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

Restart your laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve hardware and software issues.

Check for physical debris: Dust, crumbs, or other debris might be obstructing the key switches. Turn off the laptop, tilt it to the side, and gently tap on the keyboard to dislodge any loose debris. You can also use compressed air to blow out any particles that may be stuck.

Update keyboard drivers: You mentioned that you've updated the keyboard drivers, but you might want to try uninstalling them first and then reinstalling the latest drivers. To do this:

  • Open Device Manager (you can do this by right-clicking on the Start button and selecting "Device Manager").
  • Locate the "Keyboards" section, right-click on your keyboard, and select "Uninstall device."
  • Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the necessary drivers.

Check for Windows updates: Ensure that your operating system is up-to-date. Sometimes, an outdated system can cause compatibility issues.

Run a hardware diagnostics test: Many laptops, including HP, come with built-in diagnostics tools. You can access these tools during the boot-up process or through HP's support software. These tests can identify hardware issues.

External keyboard test: If possible, connect an external USB keyboard to your laptop and check if the problematic keys work on the external keyboard. This will help determine whether the issue is with the laptop's keyboard or something else.

System Restore: If the issue occurred recently, you may try using System Restore to revert your system to a previous state when the keyboard was working fine.

Remember to back up your important data before performing any significant troubleshooting steps, especially if you decide to perform a System Restore.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
