HP ENVY x360 - 15m-dr0012dx
Microsoft Windows 11

When I press some buttons, they display other letters. Most keys work ok. Someone else had the exact same issue but the answer was privately replied.

e.g. when I press "b" or "g" or  "5" - the monitor shows "bg5"

or e.g. when I press 'h" or"n" or "6" - the monitor shows "nh6"

or e.g. when I press "7" or "8" on the numerical keyboard - the monitor shows "78+"

The problem vanishes using other keyboards (external). I tried to clean the buttons but it didn't work. I did many scans to find viruses and I found nothing.

The problem also existed when I was running Win10.

Any help appreciated.

Hi @SkippyOz

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining everything so clearly—it really helps paint the full picture. That kind of keyboard behavior sounds incredibly frustrating, especially when you’ve already tried cleaning and virus scans.

Let’s walk through a few steps that might help resolve this:

Check for Keyboard Layout Issues: Sometimes, the keyboard layout settings in Windows might be configured incorrectly. Ensure your keyboard layout matches your physical keyboard. You can check or change this in Windows 11 by going to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region, and then inspecting the keyboard input method.

Update Keyboard Drivers: Outdated or corrupt keyboard drivers can cause malfunction. Update your keyboard drivers by going to Device Manager, finding the keyboard in the list, right-clicking on it, and selecting "Update driver."

Check for Sticky Keys Setting: Ensure sticky keys aren't enabled, which may inadvertently affect how keystrokes are registered. You can check this in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.

System Settings or Keyboard Settings: Confirm there's no custom key mapping software or other utility installed that might be affecting the keyboard. You should review startup programs or installed software.

Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows 11 operating system is up to date, as updates often include driver improvements and bug fixes.

Physical Keyboard Issues: There might be a physical malfunction with the keyboard keys. If the problem persists after software checks, the internal keyboard might need to be serviced or replaced.

Test with External Keyboard: As you mentioned, the issue disappears with an external keyboard, reaffirming it might be a hardware issue with the laptop's built-in keyboard rather than a system-wide software issue.
