Recently when turning on my laptop from hibernate or standby the fan will start spinning extremely fast and become worryingly, abnormally loud. There's no heat coming from my laptop, it is a cool temperature. It will get faster and faster and I have to hold the power button to force it to shut down before it combusts or something. At first it would be okay once I started it again but lately it will keep doing it and I have to repeatedly shut it down until it behaves normally.
It happened once before around five years ago (the day after I let my warranty expire!) but never had any problems since then until now.
I'm not confident in taking it apart to have a look inside as when I tried the case got stuck so I got paranoid I was going to break it if I used too much force, so I want to leave taking it to a technician as a last resort if possible.
I wanted to reinstall the driver but couldn't find anything that specifies the fan and I don't like the idea of updating my BIOS because if my fan starts acting up and I have to shut it down then that could do a lot of damage while it is updating.

@DOSpeight
Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!
I see you are experiencing Fan issues with the HP Pavilion Laptop. It is normal for the fans to spin loudly for five to twenty seconds when the computer initially turns on.
When a computer fan spins loudly for a long period of time, there might be an issue with a fan.
I have a few recommendations
- Update your Notebook to the latest BIOS from HP.COM to help reduce the internal temperature.
- Make sure the Windows and HP support assistant updates are up to date.
-
Adjust the power settings, clean the fan vents, check for suspicious processes.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi.
I have done all the things mentioned, including cleaning the fan to the best of my ability. The fan hasn't acted up these past few days so hopefully some combination of that has fixed it.
I would like to point out though that there is nothing normal about the sound, it is much louder than even when my laptop is running hot, almost like it's been overcharged. It sounds like a circular saw and is extremely worrying, forcing me to shut down the laptop immediately.
Anyway, if it starts doing it again I will come back.

Thank you for responding, I appreciate your time and effort.
I apologize for the Inconvenience. If issue persists then it could be a hardware issue on the Fan.
