I got my HP Spectre over the summer for this school year and while it is shut, it has been scratching the screen on its own. From time to time, the computer gets laggy and the frame rates drop.

Hi @lickliderjack,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 laptop. It's unusual for a laptop to scratch its own screen, but I can provide some guidance on how to address the performance issues you've mentioned.
Screen Scratching: If your laptop's screen is getting scratched, it's important to determine the cause. Scratches can occur if there's debris on the keyboard or trackpad when you close the laptop lid. Make sure your laptop is clean and free from any small particles before closing it. You can also consider using a screen protector to prevent further scratches.
Performance Issues: To address lag and frame rate drops, follow these steps:
- Update Drivers: Ensure that all your device drivers are up to date, especially your graphics drivers. Outdated drivers can lead to performance problems. You can usually find driver updates on the HP website.
- Close Background Apps: Make sure there aren't too many background applications running, as they can consume system resources. Close unnecessary programs or processes through the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
- Malware Scan: Run a malware scan on your laptop to check for any potential threats that might be causing performance issues.
- Check for Thermal Issues: Overheating can lead to performance problems. Ensure that your laptop's vents and fans are clean and not obstructed. You can use compressed air to clean out dust if necessary.
- Adjust Power Settings: Make sure your power settings are appropriately configured. Go to "Power & Sleep Settings" and select a power plan that suits your needs, such as the "High Performance" plan.
- Upgrade Hardware: If your laptop's hardware is outdated, upgrading certain components like RAM or the SSD can significantly improve performance.
- Reduce Startup Programs: Disable unnecessary startup programs. You can do this through the Task Manager or by using a tool like CCleaner.
- Monitor Task Manager: Keep an eye on the Task Manager while you're experiencing lag to see which processes or applications are using the most resources. This can help pinpoint the cause of the slowdown.
- Software Updates: Ensure that your operating system and all software are up to date with the latest updates and patches.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
