Spectre x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've had this HP spectre for a few years now (//Build 2015 I believe), and haven't had any major problems with it.  All of a sudden though, it stopped booting.  The power button doesn't appear to do anything, and I don't get anything on the screen.  The only LED that seems to have any activity at all is the charge LED, which goes white when I connect the power supply, but then turns off after a few seconds.  It stays off for a while, but then cycles back on/off. Behaviour is the same whether I have power connected or not-power button doesn't do anything no matter how long I hold it, and no other buttons seem to do anything.

Given that the charge LED is going on, I'm assuming that power is getting to the laptop, so I figure there are two possibilities here.  One is that the battery isn't actually charging at all, and is completely dead, and the other is that the battery is actually fully charged, and the light is going off because the charge circuit is detecting this and stopping the charge cycle.

I've poked around a little, and found a couple of references to dead motherboards on this model.  Since this laptop is out of warranty, I wouldn't expect a repair from HP, but is there anything I might be able to look at as a self-repair option?  If it's something as simple as a broken solder joint, I should be able to fix it, but I'd like to know what I'm looking for. The other possibility of course is that it's a broken power switch (stranger things have happened).

@ChrisBardon

Welcome to HP Forums,

Let's get straight to it!

Your references could be right, as it all points towards a hardware malfunction, although, this could be an issue with the adapter (if broken it may not supply enough power to charge the battery but turn on the LED), hence I suggest you check with an alternate power cord/adapter and another wall outlet to be on the safer side, also, perform a hard reset to get rid of any excessive static that could cause a no power issue: Click here for steps.

Let me know how that pans out,

Thanks for the reply-tried the hard reset already, and no difference.  I did check out some hardware yesterday, and managed to figure out a couple of things:

  • AC adapter is OK.  I can get 19V off of it with a multimeter
  • AC->MB connection appears to be OK.  Again, could read voltage off the connection when the AC adapter was connected.
  • Battery gives me 14V when I tested that connection, so that implies that the battery charge is good.

Otherwise, it didn't look like anything was broken/loose inside, so I'm thinking it's something board related.  I didn't go through and disassemble the entire motherboard to get at the power connector, but I wanted to at least check at a few points to make sure power was getting through.

@ChrisBardon You've drilled down to the heart of the issue and the only thing left to do, is to get the system board repaired or replaced,

I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options:
