HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-df0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Model: HP Spectre x360 15-df0xxx

CPU: i7-8750H

RAM: 16GB

GPU: Nvidia 1050

OS: Windows 10 64bit

When using the computer for any sort of graphics intense application, light gaming being the key example, the computer will run without issue for several minutes, then fps will suddenly drop to under 10 (lowering graphics settings to minimum makes no difference). When fps drop occurs, if i wait for about 1-2 minutes, the GPU fans finally kick in and my fps returns to normal and the game runs fine. The GPU fans then turn off, and a few minutes later the fps drops right down again, and takes 1-2 minutes for the GPU fans to turn back on.

Note: When the GPU fans turn on, this instantly raises my fps back to normal without delay.

Very similar problem to:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/sudden-fps-drop-in-games/td-p/...

I have tried the mentioned solution in the link above:

  • Ensure no power options were set to efficiency and all were set to maximum performance (for both Windows 10 settings and Nvidia settings).
  • I have updated my GPU drivers.

I've tried force quitting the Intel Dynamic  Platform and Thermal Framework service and stopped it from starting on boot. This was interesting. Instead of doing the usual 6 minutes of 60-100 fps followed by 2 minutes of 1-10 fps, this just seemed to even it out a bit, so i would just have about 10-20 fps all the time. So better than the fps drop frame rates, but not  playable.

This issue occurs whether i have the games graphics settings high or low, however, if i have low, i do get longer in-between fps drop. i.e. low settings 10 min good fps then 1 minute fps drop, high settings 6 min of good fps then 2 minutes of fps drop.

Is there anyway to turn the GPU into some sort of "always on full" mode so the fans just always run and i have maximum performance? Fan noise is not an issue for me, but performance drops are 😉

@Dreko I'm afraid the fan cannot be controlled as such, there's no option to have it always on/off, as the same is system managed  and I see that most of the settings have already been tweaked with regards to the power management as that's the only way to make minor modifications to the way the fan works.

You may want to click here and go through the suggested steps to work on fan spinning constantly creating eat issues, which could lead to performance lags as well.

And let me know if any of that helps!

Thanks for the response, unfortunately the issue still persists.

Perhaps it's a GPU issue? I've noticed in games it performs better when under more load. For example, during a fight in Divinity Original Sin 2, when the GPU must render more spells and fancy graphics, the fans kick in, my  performance is great and the game looks good. However then when you're just walking around in game and not much is happening it all powers down, fans turn off, and I go to unplayable frames per second.

In other games such as Rust or Starwars, it performs as I described in my original post where you get a few minutes of it being perfect, followed by a few minutes being lagged out.

It's interesting to note though that I'm lagging when the computer is cool, then when it warms up and the fans turn on I run fine.

Hope this information can help with want further possible troubleshooting ideas.

Thanks again
