- Spectre x360 13 - Wakes up on usb-c power connect/disconnect

Hi everybody, hi HP Support
I purchased a Spectre x360 13 a week ago and am really happy with it in almost all aspects.
The specific model I got is:
AW0020ng - FHD Display, 16 GB Ram, 512 GB Intel Optane, Core i7-1065G7
The issue, or let's call it the annoyance I noticed is about connecting to or disconnecting the notebook from AC through the USB-C / Thunderbolt port. When connecting or disconnecting AC power while the notebook is in sleep mode, it always wakes up and will stay awake for the configured sleep timeout in windows (for me it's 20 minutes). To put it back to sleep faster, I have to open and close the lid everytime I plugin or disconnect the charging cable. I never had such an odd behavior on other machines from other vendors. At least I'd expect that this is configurable through BIOS or windows itself.
Is there any solution or workaround for this? Desired behavior would be -> Notebook is in sleep mode (lid closed or not), Power cable get's connected or disconnected, and Notebook stays in sleep mode. I can wake it up myself if needed.
Thanks for any suggestions or help on that ...

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:
Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)
To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.
- To open the HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon
.
- Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
- Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
- Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
- Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
- Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
And, also run BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629
Method Two: Control Panel-Hardware and Sound-Power Options-System Settings:
Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04752217 to know more about Managing Power Options (Windows 10)
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Hey Echo Lake,
first thanks for your answer ... did you really read my post and understand the problem that I am describing?
I am on the latest Bios, on a clean Windows 10 Professional installation, with minimal to none HP tools installed. Everything is working fine, all drivers are installed, all devices work just fine. The problem existed already with the out of the box Windows 10 Home installation as well.
Btw, the URL you supplied to HP support assistant doesn't work for me, only gives me an error ....
Again, the problem that I see, at least for me, is that plugging in, or disconnecting the power cable to any of the two USB-C ports makes the notebook wake up from sleep. Not hibernation or shutdown, but from sleep mode, which I am using most of the time with the notebook when it is not in use.
So my first question ... is this an expected, or intended behavior with this and possibly other HP notebooks? Or are you saying, this should not happen and I might have a software/driver/update problem?
Regarding the power settings screenshot you provided, I don't see how changing any of those settings would solve the problem, that I described twice now. I would need a setting like "Wake up computer from sleep when connecting/disconnecting AC power to usb-c ports".
Btw, I also checked the usb controllers in Windows device manager, where you usually can activate/deactivate a setting named "Allow this device to wake up this computer". Those settings are deactivated and greyed out for the usb controllers, meaning I am not able to change them, but as stated they look deactivated anyway which would be what I want.
But again, the machine is waking up every time when you plugin or disconnect usb power when in sleep mode, no matter if lid is closed or open.
Hope I described the matter now in enough detail ....
I'd appreciate any further suggestions. But maybe you want to check back first if the behavior is to be expected with the spectre x360 13 or not ....

The computer should not wake up from sleep when you connect/disconnect a USB C device unless specified so. I recommend check in BIOS whether you have an option like resume from sleep by USB device. If yes, then disable it should take care of the issue.
If you don't find the option in BIOS then follow the below steps and check if it helps.
Press ‘Win + I’ shortcut keys to open Windows Settings app.
Click on ‘Update & Security’, then go to the ‘Troubleshoot’ section from the left-side menu.
Scroll downwards a bit and click on the ‘Power’ option.
Click on ‘Run the Troubleshooter’. It will start detecting the problems and if it finds any issues, go ahead fixing it.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Cheers!

Hi Fossette,
thanks for your reply, I ran the trouble shooter, it didn't find any issues, except for things like "time before computer goes to sleep too long ...." which i set manually higher than default 4 minutes.
I checked Bios already. There is no specific setting regarding that matter, only one usb related setting regarding charging USB devices when connected .... I might try disabling that one, but from the explanation in bios this is about if you can charge your phone for example on one of the usb ports ....
Edit: just disabled that one USB charging option in bios, make no difference. Plugging in Power through USB-C immediately wakes the machine up 😕
Any other ideas?
Thanks,

Follow the below steps and check if it helps.
On your keyboard, press ‘Windows key + R’ and type ‘Powercfg.cpl’ in it.
Hit the ‘Enter’ key to open power options in the control panel.
From the left-hand side, click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do’.
Then, click on the link ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’.
From the bottom given power button options, uncheck the ‘Turn on fast startup’ option.
Click on ‘Save changes’ button.
If the issue persists, follow the below steps.
Go to the ‘Start’ menu and type ‘Control panel’ then hit the ‘Enter’ key.
From the top-right filter, choose ‘Large icons’ and navigate to the ‘Power Options’,
Click and open the ‘Power options’.
Select the power plan according to your requirement and click on ‘Change plan settings’.
Click on ‘Change advanced power settings’.
In the power options windows, click on the button ‘Restore plan defaults’.
Click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’ button.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Hey,
tried both of your suggestions. Doesn't make any difference. The notebook still wakes up from sleep (again, I am talking about Sleep/Standby, not Hibernation. With Hibernation the machine stays in Hibernation when plugging/unplugging usb-c power) the moment usb-c power cable is plugged/unplugged.
Can you really confirm, or any other Spectre x360 13 (late 2019) users, that with their devices you see a different behavior? I am really doubting that this is a software issue. This probably needs to be addressed within bios, to have the option how the machine reacts when power is plugged into usb-c when in Sleep mode.
Any more ideas?

I recommend you contact support to further diagnose the issue.
Here is how you can get in touch with support.
1)Click on this link – www.hp.com/contacthp/
2)Select the product type.
3)Enter the serial number of your device or select let HP detect your product option.
4)Select the country from the drop-down.
5)You should see the HP phone support number or Chat option listed.
