I have my HP Spectre x360 Convertible for about 4 years and recently (for about two months), the laptop restarts suddenly after showing Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD). I do not how much of this is due to windows update. I decided to check the inside of the laptop and noticed that the battery has swollen. It is not swollen a lot like those that can be find by googling but obviously is swollen. Only one cell is swollen as seen in the googled photos. Using the HP diagnostic tools, it says that everything is ok with the battery. There is no problem with the normal charging/discharging of the battery and the battery can still hold the charge for 4-5 hours. My questions are:
1- if I should replace the battery as soon as possible although it is functioning properly? This battery is not cheap!
2- If BSOD is due to the swollen battery? or you think there is another reason?
3- There are some cheaper batteries on Amazon. Are they reliable?
4- As just one cell is swollen, is it possible to replace just that cell somehow?
In other versions of laptops, when the battery is not functioning properly, it cannot hold the charge but you can still use the laptop by plugging the charger. The difficulty here is that the swollen battery may start fire and cause damage to the other parts of the laptop and even the person who is using the laptop. So, there are safety issues and also extra costs for the owners because they have to replace the battery after a period.
Thanks

I have had badly swollen batteries that still take a charge and work fine. If it is swelling it must be replaced. No way to replace a single cell. The swelling battery might contribute to a BSOD but it might also be another problem. Replace the battery and see if the BSOD disappears. The amazon aftermarket batteries are a very acceptable replacment on a 4 year old laptop. Good luck.
