Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
Chapter 1 has the list of supported drives HP offered in the model series.
Maintenance and Service Guide HP ProBook 440 G6 Notebook PC
If your notebook has an Intel core processor, it supports NVMe SSD's.
The drive capacities listed in the service manual are just what HP offered in the model series, not the maximum capacity supported.
If your notebook has an Intel core processor, I don't see any reason why a 1 TB NVMe SSD wouldn't work.
If your notebook can support a NVMe SSD, I recommend either the Samsung 980 (not 980 Pro) or the Western Digital Blue SN570.
