How to get rid of sticky key function on new laptop

Hi @Chelsea202

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how inconvenient it feels when Sticky Keys suddenly activate on a new laptop—it interrupts the natural rhythm of typing and can make the keyboard feel unresponsive.

Thank you for noticing and describing the issue clearly. Let’s walk through the steps to turn off Sticky Keys and restore smooth keyboard use.

Steps to Disable Sticky Keys in Windows

Quick Shortcut Method

  • Press the Shift key five times in a row.
  • A Sticky Keys prompt may appear.
  • If it does, select Go to Settings and turn the feature off.

Through Windows Settings

  • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  • Navigate to Accessibility > Keyboard.
  • Under Sticky Keys, toggle the switch to Off.
  • Also uncheck the option “Allow the shortcut key to start Sticky Keys” to prevent accidental activation.

Control Panel Method (alternative)

  • Open the Control Panel.
  • Go to Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use.
  • Uncheck “Turn on Sticky Keys.”
  • Click Apply and then OK.

Confirm the Change

  • Test by pressing Shift multiple times.
  • The Sticky Keys prompt should no longer appear, and your keyboard should respond normally.
