Microsoft Windows 11

I was initially very satisfied with the performance of my HP Victus 15-Fb0147AX laptop. However, since summer began, I have been experiencing significant FPS drops and stuttering. I monitored the temperatures using MSI Afterburner and noticed that the GPU (RX 6500M) is throttling at 75°C, which seems abnormal; the typical throttling limit is 90°C. The CPU temperatures are fine, also with a 90°C limit.

This situation is frustrating, as I can’t play games effectively due to the GPU throttling. Additionally, I noticed that there hasn't been a BIOS update from your end, and the advanced tab in the BIOS is locked.

If there’s a way to resolve this issue, please let me know quickly. I attempted to adjust the limits with MSI Afterburner, but it appears the GPU settings are locked by HP. Please advise on how I can fix this.

Hi @Venom21,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand how frustrating it can be to experience significant FPS drops and stuttering in your HP Victus 15-Fb0147AX, especially when you're trying to enjoy gaming. Let's work together to see if we can improve your GPU performance.

  • Have you noticed any specific games or applications that are affected more than others, or is the issue consistent across all games?
  • Did the performance issues start suddenly, or did they gradually worsen over time since the summer began?
  • Are you using the laptop on a flat surface, and is the cooling system (fans and vents) clean and unobstructed?

Try the following.

Check for Dust and Cooling:

  • Ensure that the laptop's vents and fans are clean. Dust accumulation can lead to overheating and throttling.
  • Use compressed air to gently clean the vents, or if you're comfortable, you can open the laptop to clean it thoroughly.

Adjust Power Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and select High Performance.
  • Click on Change plan settings, then Change advanced power settings. Under PCI Express > Link State Power Management, set it to Off. This can help improve performance by preventing the GPU from throttling due to power saving features.

Update GPU Drivers:

  • Visit the AMD website and download the latest drivers for your RX 6500M GPU. Installing the latest drivers can resolve performance issues and ensure your GPU is functioning correctly.
  • Use the Device Manager to check if there are any updates available for the GPU driver.

Monitor Background Processes:

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check for any resource-hogging applications or processes running in the background that could be impacting performance.
  • Close any unnecessary applications while gaming to free up resources.

Lower Graphics Settings:

  • While this isn't a permanent fix, temporarily lowering the graphics settings in your games can help reduce the load on your GPU and improve FPS until a more permanent solution is found.
  • Additionally, you can try setting the game to run at a lower resolution.

If these steps do not resolve the issue and you're still experiencing throttling at 75°C, it may be worthwhile to contact HP Phone Support for further assistance, especially since the advanced BIOS settings are locked.

Keep me posted for further assistance

@Elohi_NR

My temperatures are normal. The throttle limit for both CPU and GPU should be 90°C, as seen in my Nitro 5. However, the RX 6500M throttles at 75°C, causing FPS drops and stutters. This isn't a heating issue; it's due to an incorrectly set temperature limit on your end. This problem occurs in all games once I reach 75°C.

Everything is updated.
