HP Pavilion 15TS (i5-4200)
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
It seems I fried the motherboard on the HP Envy 15t-k200 (K2T35AV), i7-4270 HQ CPU. This has 16 GB DDR3 RAM. I also have an HP Pavilion TS (F5W51UA#ABA), i5-4200 CPU, that has 12 GB RAM.

Any chance I can swap parts between the two? The motherboard for the HP Envy seems costly on eBay (around $250). Thought I might add more memory to the HP Pavilion and maybe change the CPU by taking parts from the Envy. Could I add an SSD using an adapter for the dvd drive? Maybe change the internal speakers? Or are these parts incompatible?

Please go through the Maintenance and Service guide of your notebook:

HP ENVY Notebook - 15t-k200 CTO (ENERGY STAR) - Maintenance and Service Guide

HP Pavilion 15-n293cl TouchSmart Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) - Maintenance and Service Guide

Memory information, the Maximum memory supported on HP Envy Notebook is - Supports up to 16 GB of system RAM Whereas the Maximum Memory supported on HP Pavilion notebook is Supports up to 12 GB max system memory. Both support (DDR3L-1600MHz module),

SSD - On HP Envy it Support M.2 SATA Storage - it supports 256 GB M.2 SATA Where as on HP Pavilion notebook - Supports 24 GB mSATA solid-state drive with system memory up to 8 GB

The 15t-k200 has the processor soldered to the board so you will not be able to swap the processor over.

Memory will swap over; they use the same type so you can take any 2 of the 8 gig modules you have and install them in the Pavilion TS. See page 42 of the Manual. There is an easy access door for memory.

You don't want to put an SSD in an optical caddy as drives mounted that way run slow and the extra speed of the SSD and cost is wasted. You could put a 2.5 inch SATA SSD in it and then put the mechanical drive in an optical caddy.

The Pavilion absolutely DOES NOT support an M.2 disk. It can accept an older type of small (24 gig) mSATA mSSD used as an accelerator for the mechanical hard drive. It is too old to support an M.2 disk.

Speakers are not swappable. Laptop speakers are proprietary parts and not upgradeable.

Post back with any more questions.
