OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck2000 (70W99AV)

I got the typical error for my HP Omen 17 System. At first I thought it was a Hardware (Fan issue) but it wasnt so I digged the HP Forum to find some solutions for it. But it seems my Laptop got the usual OMEN ck2**** Error. My FANs do not operate like they should, 95% of the time the dont even react and stay off. 

So I replaced the FANs cleaned the FANs, put new paste on CPU and GPU and thought It would fix the problem. Checked my BIOS and drivers, did a Hardreset the typical stuff the QR-Code tells me to do if you get the ERROR. After replacing the FANs etc. first I thought its fixed. But no, after 2-3 days I got the Error 90B again. So my question is, because its a really know issue for this type of laptop from HP, will I get a replacement? Ofc the warranty isnt active anymore. So is there a way to get some of my money back? Because 1,5 years lifetime for a 2.500€ is pretty insane. Does someone have informations for steps I could take?

 

So it seems the problem is cause by the motherboard and the FANs may not get enough power to be active?

But why are they working every 20th time?

I understand you’re getting the System Fan Error (90B) on your HP Omen 17, and the fans behave inconsistently even after replacing them and doing full thermal maintenance. Let’s go through a few steps and clarifications to understand what’s happening and what options you realistically have.

What the 90B error actually indicates
The 90B error is triggered when the BIOS does not detect expected fan RPM during startup.
It does not always mean the fan itself is faulty — it can also indicate a control, sensor, or power delivery issue on the motherboard.

Why new fans can still show the same error
Since you replaced the fans and the issue returned after a few days, this strongly points away from the fans themselves.
On OMEN 17 ck2xxx models, the fan power and tachometer signals are controlled by the embedded controller (EC) on the motherboard.

Why the fans sometimes work (every ~20th boot)
This behavior is typical of a failing EC circuit or degraded fan power rail.
When the EC initializes correctly, the fans spin normally; when it doesn’t, the BIOS sees 0 RPM and throws 90B.

BIOS and EC reset (important step)
Shut the system down completely.
Disconnect the charger and hold the power button for 20–30 seconds to drain residual power.
This forces a full EC reset, which can temporarily restore fan behavior (but won’t fix hardware degradation).

Check BIOS fan behavior (not just version)
Enter BIOS and observe whether fan speed values appear or remain at 0.
If the BIOS intermittently fails to read fan RPM even with known-good fans, this confirms a board-level issue.

Thermal paste and heat are not the root cause
Your repaste and cleaning were correct maintenance steps, but they do not affect the 90B trigger logic.
The error occurs before thermal load, during POST hardware checks.

Hello, thanks for the response.

 

I did the following steps already. At the moment I get the issue way less frequently. Now its the opposite, 90% of the time I can use it without a problem, but the problem still occures sometimes. The fans still stop working sometimes or take a break for some secs like in the graphs within my added forum post.
i felt like the biggest change was the tip with disabling fast start up, this changed the freqency of the error a lot, but its still there.

 

and it really looks like there is no permanent fix for it. And changing the MB with the EC is a pretty costly thing for a just 2 year old 2.500€ laptop..

I understand your HP Victus 15-fa0353TX shows horizontal screen flickering on startup, which disappears after the laptop has been running for a while. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and possible resolutions.

Check display refresh rate
Since lowering the refresh rate temporarily reduces flickering, try setting the display to a standard rate like 60 Hz or 120 Hz in Windows Display Settings.
This helps identify if the issue is tied to high-frequency initialization on cold boot.

Update graphics drivers
Even if your drivers are up to date, try performing a clean reinstall:

Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in safe mode to remove current GPU drivers.

Reinstall the latest NVIDIA and Intel drivers from HP’s support page.
Cold-boot flickering can sometimes be caused by driver initialization conflicts.

Update BIOS and firmware
Make sure your BIOS and any panel firmware or EC firmware are the latest versions from HP.
Some Victus models have had startup flicker issues fixed in BIOS updates.

Check Intel/NVIDIA graphics switching
Since the external monitor works fine, the issue is likely internal panel initialization.
Try forcing the laptop to use only the NVIDIA GPU or only Intel iGPU temporarily to see if flickering occurs.
This can isolate whether the flicker is tied to hybrid graphics switching.

Perform a full power reset
Shut down the laptop, unplug the charger, and remove any connected devices.
Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to drain residual power, then restart.
This ensures the display panel initializes cleanly.

Test in Safe Mode or BIOS
If flickering occurs in BIOS or Safe Mode, the issue is hardware-related (display panel or LVDS/eDP connection).
If it only occurs in Windows, it’s more likely driver or software related.

Panel or cable check (if issue persists)
Because the flickering appears only on cold boot and disappears later, it may be a panel initialization timing issue or a loose/damaged eDP cable inside the laptop.
This may require servicing if software and settings adjustments do not fix the behavior.

What is actually failing 

What 90B means on OMEN 17

BIOS checks for fan RPM feedback during POST

If RPM is missing or unstable → 90B is triggered

This check happens before thermal load

Why new fans don’t fix it

On affected OMEN 17 models:

Fan power and tach signals are managed by the Embedded Controller (EC) on the motherboard

The EC intermittently:

Fails to supply stable voltage to the fans

Loses RPM signal synchronization

Result: fans may work on some boots and fail on others

Why it works “most of the time” now

Disabling Fast Startup forces:

A full EC reinitialization on cold boot

That’s why your success rate improved to ~90%

However:

This is a workaround, not a fix
The EC degradation continues underneath

Hello,

 

thank you for the quick response!

 

Soo the only solution is to repair the EC? Or isnt it possible to repair it? Do I need to change the whole motherboard? 

because it happend like 5 days after my warranty ended.. and no chance to react that fast. 

iam happy that there is now a known solution to the problem, but iam still not happy to pay 500-1000€ for a two year old laptop. Isnt there a chance to get it included into may warranty because its a deeper problem and the warranty just ended 22. November I think…
